The play of art, the illumination of photographic detail. Considerations on the Use of Images in Roberto Longhi
Abstract
This article explores the use of photography as a way to research under an artistic and historical perspective in two relevant case studies, namely Piero della Francesca and Carlo Braccesco, deeply analyzed by Roberto Longhi. In light of what has been discovered on the method used by the well-known art historian, the analysis focuses on his critical interpretation that intertwines with the relationship between image and text. It is clear that the connection between written word and visual image of details stresses the innovation of Longhi’s personal point of view on art and history. Moreover, his perspective shows how the famous historian transforms its literature in visual experiences.
