Résumé

The essay focuses on the novel Lotte in Weimar (1939) by Thomas Mann, which inaugurates the last phase of his literary production. It investigates the most relevant themes and stylistic features recurring in it. Ageing, both a metaphor and a stylistic signature at the same time, allowed Mann to move between various levels: Bourgeois realism, Sturm und Drang and Classicism; real and fictitious loves; reality, fantasy and artwork; youth and maturity; science and poetry; history and myth. Through the disenchanted and an irreverent ironic gaze, Mann creates an ante-litteram postmodern work. In particular, the essay analyzes the relationships between Mann, Germany in the 1930s vs Goethe's age; the relationship between Eros and Thanatos, work of art and life; and finally, the hotel as the ideal chronotope of the narrative.

Silvia Ulrich, Università di Torino

Silvia Ulrich è ricercatrice di Letteratura tedesca presso il Dipartimento di Lingue e Letterature Straniere e Culture Moderne dell’Università di Torino. I suoi interessi di ricerca gravitano intorno ai Spatial, Cultural, Digital Turns, studiati all’interno della letteratura tedesca dei sec. XVIII-XXI, e della traduzione letteraria. In particolare, studia i significati epistemologici dello spazio abitato nel contesto letterario, del pacifismo, dell’invecchiamento, della disabilità, delle tematiche ambientali, degli adattamenti cinematografici di opere letterarie e della svolta digitale nel paradigma della ricerca accademica sulla letteratura tedesca. Ha pubblicato Impostori, avventurieri e cavalieri d'industria nella letteratura tedesca del Novecento (2006) e La noia. Storia e opinioni intorno al "male del secolo" (2006), oltre a saggi su T. Mann, Kafka, S. Zweig, J. Roth, Brecht, A. Schnitzler, H. Heine, L. Seiler, W. Serner, F. Wander.
